Globalteer

Globalteer projects range from community development and children’s projects in Cambodia, Peru and Colombia to wildlife rescue and an elephant refuge in Thailand.

The placements

The street children project in Cambodia needs volunteers to help out and also to teach English. The project offers a free education programme and a day centre for street kids, focusing on helping the young and vulnerable to find a way out of poverty. Learning English offers them a better chance of a job in Siem Reap which has a big tourist industry.

The Thailand Wild Animal Rescue Centre is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of wild animals previously exploited as pets, used for profit within the tourist industry or rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. You will help feed the animals and clean and maintain their enclosures. You can also volunteer at an elephant sanctuary, giving hands-on help to the staff in caring for the elephants and their environment.

In South America, the Peru Kids project includes orphanages, a free education programme, medical clinic, community project, vocational training and an environmental programme. The Colombia Kids project is based around an outreach programme for the street children, which includes free education, health care and day centres. The children are provided with English classes, lessons in Spanish, arts, music, sports and various vocational training.

Globalteer strives to ensure that projects can not only sustain the amazing work that they do but also expand to ensure their continual existence.

Locations

The street children project is based in Siem Reap, Cambodia. This is close to the World Heritage site of Angkor Wat, so transport links are good (the town's international airport is close by). Siem Reap is about 200 miles from Cambodia's capital city, Phnom Penh.

The Wildlife Rescue Centre and Elephant Refuge are both in Thailand, about 2-3 hours south of Bangkok. The local village has amenities but no tourists, so volunteers get to see the real Thailand. There are also beach resorts less than an hour away where volunteers can go on their time off.

The Peru Kids project is based in the magnificent city of Cusco, the oldest continually inhabited city in South America and the staging post for Machu Picchu. The Colombia Kids project is based in the Andes mountain range near the vibrant city of Medellin.
