Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity organises Global Village challenges, which give you the opportunity to help a family in need  to build their own home, transforming their lives and quite possibly your own.

The programmes

Habitat for Humanity will place you with 10-12 like-minded volunteers with whom you'll spend up to two weeks on location in your chosen country. You will discover what poverty housing is really all about as you immerse yourself in the local community and actually build a house hand-in-hand with a Habitat homepartner family.

You will be building most days. You may be plastering, installing plasterboard or insulation, painting, tiling, or brick-laying – whatever the task, the master builders on site will ensure you learn all you need to know.

By working, sharing, sweating, eating and laughing together, you and the new homepartner, along with their friends and neighbours and other volunteers, will form a once-in-a-lifetime team.

As you build you will see a new hope grow in the people around you. Your hard work will give them the extra support they need to help break the poverty cycle that has kept them in such appalling conditions for so many years. You will come away from the experience having improved their lives forever.

During your free time you will be able to get to know the local people, language and culture, as well as join in with some fabulous excursions.

About Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is an international housing charity dedicated to the elimination of poverty housing and homelessness around the world. Founded in 1976, and now working in 90 countries around the world, Habitat for Humanity have built over 260,000 houses in partnership with people in need of safe, decent housing.

Based on the notion of giving a hand up rather than a handout, homeowners must commit around 500 hours of “sweat equity” in the building of their house and others in the community. They then pay back the cost of the house with a no-profit affordable mortgage. This money is used to fund further builds around the world.

To date over one and a half million people, who would otherwise be living in appalling poverty, have benefited by working with Habitat for Humanity and are now living in safe, permanent housing.
