Karen Hilltribes Trust
Volunteer in Thailand with the Karen Hilltribes Trust, teaching English in a local primary school. Training is provided over a weekend before you leave, so no experience is necessary to volunteer.
The placements
Karen Hilltribes Trust offer tailor-made volunteer teaching placements in northern Thailand with the Karen tribe. You will live with a Karen family and volunteer in a local school, interacting with Karen people of all ages. Apply your skills and life experience to help people of a completely different culture. You have the opportunity to get involved in all aspects of school and village life - past volunteers have helped with arts activities, sports days, etc.
A typical day starts early for the Karen, when the cockerels start crowing! You will spend most of your day at the local school, teaching English to the Karen children, some of whom have walked miles to get there. The school day finishes at around 4:30pm and it gets dark by 6, so evening activities like reading are done by candlelight.
Discover that a simple life can be enjoyed with the basics – clean water, good crops and access to education.
Location
The volunteer placements are in remote mountainous forests of Mae Hong Son province, Northern Thailand.
How long?
Usually 6 – 10 months but can be shorter on request. There's also the option to extend your volunteer placement by working on the installation of a clean water system (3 weeks).
Pricing
£1,750 including food, accommodation and support both in the UK and Thailand (but not flights). As KHT is a charity, you can gift-aid this donation, which increases the amount by a third (at no cost to you). Half your donation will go directly to projects in Thailand.
