Volunteer Action for Peace (VAP) provide affordable volunteer opportunities from 2 weeks to 12 months, throughout the world.
The programmes
Volunteer Action for Peace projects offer intensive short-term experience in a specific field of work allowing time to develop basic skills and techniques.
These projects are excellent intensive language schools and a great opportunity to develop interpersonal and communication skills, as you will be working in a group.
A typical day starts early after ending late. The most basic tasks of toiletry and breakfast can be an adventure, as water and electricity are not always availabler. You travel to work like the local people, often with the local people and using the same simple tools. The local work leaders are in control of the work but tasks are discussed, often through interpreters. There is a lot of laughter. Work is sometimes hard, sometimes in hot climates, in other projects as in children or refugee projects it is not physically hard but mentally and emotionally demanding.
There are breaks for water and meals and the working day is generally short. This allows the volunteers to take a trip in the late afternoon and evening to a local site known for its views or heritage.
Later the evening meal is the highlight of the day, maybe it is day for a particular nationality among the volunteers to cook and present their culture in song, or a special night when the local council invites the volunteers for a drink and buffet or perhaps there is a local fiesta to go to.
All of the above also happens on longer term stays although those are in some cases done on an individual basis and not in a group.
