Choosing a gap year company
One of the most common questions we get asked is 'How do I choose a gap year company?'
This is a much more common question for career breakers than gappers. Career breakers want to be sure their money is going to a good cause. They want to know exactly what they're paying for, and what they're getting for their money. They don't mind paying for a volunteering placement, but they don't want to waste their hard-earned cash.
When I am asked this, I make the following suggestions:
- Search for organisations on our site. Although we can't provide a cast-iron guarantee for everyone who advertises with us, we do vet the companies we work with, and we won't promote any company who doesn't adhere to our own high ethical standards. We have never had any complaints about our advertisers, and we actively encourage feedback from people like you (you can email us if you have any concerns).
- Don't be afraid to ask questions (a list is available here). Legitimate organisations like to be asked questions, because they're proud of their track record.
- Try to meet the people from the organisation in person if you can. If their offices are too far, see if you can chat to them at a show (many exhibit at travel and lifestyle shows). See how willing they are to answer your questions!
- Speak to people who have used the organisation you're thinking of going with.
- Keep your eyes open for articles in the press about gap year, career break and voluntary organisations.
- Don't be put off if an organisation is 'for profit' rather than a charity, if they look ethical. There are many commercial companies bringing huge benefits to impoverished people across the world.
The majority of organisations which organise voluntary placements abroad are legitimate and honest. Taking time and care in choosing your volunteering organisation will enable you to do some great work with them overseas, and to really make a difference.
