HELLO

Well, what a packed newsletter we have for you this month.

Tons of new career breaks - including special ones for you older folk - our usual round-up of inspirational blogs, pictures and videos, and how to find out if an organisation is reputable. Plus there's our section on free and discounted stuff, and how to get involved with exciting new developments here at The Career Break Site.

So put off heading out into the sunshine for a few more minutes, sit back, and have a read of this.

SPONSORED - SPECIAL PROJECTS FOR VOLUNTEERS AGED 50+

Gap years and volunteer trips abroad are not just for teenagers! Career Break Site approved partner Projects Abroad has just launched a range of organised volunteer trips, called “Grown-up Specials”. If you're 50 or over, you have the chance to immerse yourself in a new culture while helping to support a disadvantaged community.

You have a wealth of experience and skills that are very much needed in volunteer projects around the world. Whether you’re retired, taking a career break or simply in search of something different, these specially-designed programmes are a wonderful way to give back, achieve personal growth and enjoy a rewarding travel experience - alongside people your own age.

Grown-up Specials are two weeks long, and each trip is designed for volunteers to have the most impact possible at their placement. Full support is offered before and throughout your placement, from local staff and staff here in the UK.

Grown-up Special projects are now running in Nepal, Jamaica and South Africa.

(Under 50? See Projects Abroad's other volunteering opportunities here).

CAREER BREAKS STARTING IN THE NEXT 3 MONTHS

Need to get away soon? Here are all the career breaks starting in the next 3 months.

ON THE BLOG

The 7 biggest lies you believe about people who take a gap year is a must-read for anyone who thinks a gap year isn't for them. Share it with your friends and colleagues!

How to beat the applicant tracking system is a guest post which tells you how to avoid the automated processes that dump your CV in the bin. It's written in American but the advice applies to Brits too.

How to write the perfect LinkedIn profile is another guest post useful to any career breaker looking for a job.

10 things you can travel without is a light-hearted post about - well, you can probably guess. Some useful advice in there too, to help keep you safe and avoid putting your back out!

Why voluntourism is an effective career break option is our last post, and another guest one for this month. If you've been wondering about volunteering on your career break, give it a read!

We're currently looking for real career breakers to tell their story on our blog. You don't have to have left yet to be featured - we want people in the planning stages too! If you'd like to be famous and featured, drop us an email.

PHOTO CORNER - YOUR MONTHLY DOSE OF INSPIRATION

Something a bit different this month - an article with pics of black and white landscape photography.

VIDEO CORNER

British geek Sunil left a decent job at the age of 40 to travel the world, even though he was scared. Here's a lovely little montage of his adult gap year which he hopes will inspire others.

TIP OF THE MONTH

Pack stringy things like earphones and necklaces in those tiny press-and-seal bags. They're less likely to get tangled up, and they won't get tangled round the rest of your stuff. They'll stay clean too!

If you have a tip for us, email us or tweet us.

QUESTION OF THE MONTH

"My son is planning to take a gap year with [organisation]. Is it reputable?"

Excellent question, man who emailed us whose name we can't remember (we delete all emails after replying because people contact us in confidence). We don't currently work with the organisation he was asking about but did some digging and said they seemed fine. Obviously our approved list is the best place to start - and you can always ask to speak to past participants of a programme to see what they thought.

As an aside, we do sometimes get parents contacting us on behalf of their kids, but we encourage the gappers or career breakers themselves to do their own research. After all, that's one of the skills you're developing!

If you've got a question, get in touch! We never reveal your name (unless you want us to!)

JOKE

Thank you, student loans, for getting me through university. I don't think I can ever repay you.

FINALLY

We're busy developing exciting new things for The Career Break Site, but we need your help! We're looking for smart, enthusiastic people to work with us. Send us an email and we can tell you more about what's on offer.

Until next time,

Love,

The Career Break Site
