Name: Jane Trimmer
Occupation: Senior Web Developer, SugarCat Publishing
Location: Dorset, UK
Launch date for The Career Break Site: 6 June 2005
Jane taught her self web development at the age of 58 in order to start a new career. She is the mother of Rachel Morgan-Trimmer, who founded the site.
Why did you decide to become a web developer?
When Rachel started talking about setting up an internet publishing company, I thought it would be a great opportunity to start a new career. I've been interested in the web since it began, and I loved the idea of building websites myself.
What's your background?
I had many years of experience as an analyst programmer, working for insurance companies and the NHS. I then decided to do an MA in computer arts, starting the course on my 50th birthday! It was on this course that I picked up a bit of the basics of web design, and in particular, of HTML. I carried on with various artistic and IT projects before starting to learn web development.
How did you learn?
I had trouble finding a course, or even a private tutor, so I taught myself from books and online tutorials. It wasn't easy, learning on my own, but I knew one or two developers who offered useful advice on what I should be learning. Most people in this field are young men which makes me feel a bit like a fish out of water sometimes, but the beauty of online discussion forums is that no-one knows who you are! It means you don't have to deal with other people's prejudices.
What do you enjoy most about your new job?
We all work flexible hours, which is very convenient. I also have a lot of creative freedom and the ability to make my own decisions about the way I work.
What is your favourite bit of the Career Break Site?
I love the fact that it's so accessible and easy to navigate. I always feel proud when people tell me how much they like the site and how easy it is for them to find the information they need.
What's your advice to other older people wanting to take a career break?
Look at your age as an advantage rather than a disadvantage. Not only do you have a huge amount of experience, but you also have valuable skills and talents that may be lacking in a younger person. For example, I'm told that I'm much more thorough than most web developers - a fact that I attribute to my age and the fact my professional experience was gained in a different environment from today's more pressured working world.
