Travelling on a career break is not just an extended holiday. It's a chance for you to learn new skills, develop confidence, expand your knowledge, and you can combine it with courses or volunteering if you like too.
Ways to travel on your career break:
- On a round-the world (RTW) ticket. It's cheaper than buying separate tickets, and you can usually change the dates and or route while you're away (there might be restrictions and/or fees).
- On a continent pass which is similar but lets you travel around a single continent.
- On an open-jaw ticket - with this, you fly into one place and out of another, travelling between them either on a separate local flight, or overland.
- By train - particularly popular around Europe, but of course you can do this in other parts of the world.
- On water - for career breakers, this usually means working as yacht crew or on ships.
- Travelling overland - this is usually the option for shorter bits of your journey although some career breakers make epic treks overland. Overlanding companies let you combine safety with off-the-beaten-track adventure.
- Expeditions - these usually involve some purpose, like volunteer work and/or research. They often go to quite remote places.
Most career breakers combine several travelling methods - for example, doing a round-the-world flight, but taking some overland routes and perhaps going on an expedition.
