Want to volunteer your way into a new career? Apply your talents in enterprise, communications or operations by volunteering within the humanitarian sector.
Street Child believes that educating children is the single greatest step towards eliminating poverty. There are 121 million children out of school across the world. Millions more are in school but failing to learn. Street Child goes where others don't, providing access to education for vulnerable children living in some of the toughest places in the world.
As an international volunteer, you will have the opportunity to use the skills you have to get stuck into real development work overseas, and make a lasting and meaningful difference to the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable children. Depending on your skills, experience and preferences, you will be placed in one of the following areas:
Social Enterprise
Help to manage and expand Street Child Commercial: a profit-generating enterprise that helps to fund the education programmes. Working within a locally-led enterprise, this is an exciting opportunity to make a positive, lasting impact and challenge yourself to adapt your skills to an entirely new economic context. You will be applying your ability for innovation and management by helping to launch an entirely new enterprise in Uganda or develop strategies for growth for an existing enterprise in Sierra Leone.
Communications
We need volunteers with skills in field reporting, project documenting and/or photojournalism.
If you are a talented journalist, photographer or filmmaker, travel to Sierra Leone or Uganda to capture stories from the field and create compelling content for the Street Child portfolio. Your work will be shared across mainstream and national media, and so this is the ideal opportunity for you to build your own outstanding portfolio of work.
Operations & Logistics
If you're adventurous and love sports, you can take a leading role in the legendary Sierra Leone Marathon 2019! You will be working with the race director, project coordinator and Street Child marathon team to coordinate the marathon event in Sierra Leone. There are over 700 runners (from Sierra Leone, the UK, and beyond), 4 different race distances, and multiple teams and stakeholders to manage. It is hectic to say the least, but you will doubtlessly enjoy every minute, learn as much as you give, and have the experience of a lifetime!
(This role runs from April to June only with a duration of 6 to 8 weeks.)
All of these roles require the following qualifications:
- Demonstrable skills & experience in business, communications or operations (depending on which role you apply for)
- A keen interest in contributing to social enterprise and humanitarian work
- A strong initiative with the ability to adapt and thrive in a start-up environment
- Respect for the local culture
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
You will be fully supported before and during your volunteer placement, and you must be prepared to live and work in basic conditions. You will be considered a valuable member of the team and so you will be required to manage your own work plan, reporting regularly to your in-country line manager.
You will be working in some of the most interesting and beautiful countries, and so on the weekends you are free to head out and explore as much as you can!
