Sell your house
Selling your house is quite a dramatic option, but it does have its advantages.- More cash for your career break (both from your house and related costs, like buildings insurance)
- You don't have to worry about it while you're away
- More freedom when you come back
- No chain can mean a quicker sale
- Are planning to move anyway (or otherwise planning a fresh start)
- Will be away for a long time
- Have flexibility on their career break (eg the option to extend it by a further year; or the ability to leave later if the buyer falls through)
- No rental income
- You will be homeless, and have nowhere to come back to
- You'll have to move your stuff twice (once into storage and once into your new home)
If you decide to sell your house, make sure you leave enough time to get everything done and dusted before you go away. You'll need contingency plans too, in case anything goes wrong (eg a buyer pulls out).
