African Conservation Experience game ranger course

This is a career break for you if you're interested in learning about conservation, maybe even with a view to changing career!

The 2-week course is hands-on, and covers a huge variety of topics that form part of the knowledge of an experienced game ranger. You will learn predominantly out in the field, during bush walks, game drives and tracking exercises. The modules you will cover include:

  • Animal identification
  • Wildlife behaviour
  • Tracking and spoor identification
  • Bushveld ecology
  • Safety in the field
  • Botany, geology & astronomy
  • Handling firearms for safety
  • Identifying and handling dangerous snakes and reptiles
  • Night drives and appropriate use of spot-lighting
  • Basic bushcraft during a sleep-out in the bush

This course is an intensive introduction to South African wildlife, and you'll get unparalleled access to several amazing locations. As part of the course you will spend several nights in a rustic bush camp in the Greater Kruger and have the opportunity to view wildlife on foot, which makes for far more thrilling and intimate encounters than game drives.

The course concludes with an optional exam and you'll will receive a course certificate. This is not a FGASA (Field Guide Association of South Africa) certificate, but the course syllabus is compiled in line with the FGASA Level 1 qualification, so you would be able to register with FGASA for an exam after completing the course.
