30 April 2018

Welcome to our newsletter for April - the month where we had the full gamut of seasons before seemingly returning to winter again. But if you are fed up of the cold, wet, and same old same old, fear not! We are here to help you.

Our newsletter today features all sorts of freebies and fab competitions, super useful tips, new stuff on the site and the never-funny joke (which got ANOTHER complaint this month!). We've also got our usual slew of inspirational stuff for you, with new posts on the blog as well as our usual photo and video sections.

By the way, half of this was written in a hotel bathroom and your friendly editor got backache from hunching over a laptop (the perils of sharing a hotel room with a late sleeper!). So please make sure you sit up straight before diving into this month's newsletter - we don't want you ending up with the same fate! Enjoy!

Kidogo have some fab volunteer projects in Kenya coming up in July and August. You can work with children in schools or orphanages, from 1 week to more than 4. Activities for the volunteers are included, plus a weekend safari! As well as the day-to-day care of the children, you will also be able to develop and lead activities with them, such as crafts, music and sports.

Your placement will be tailored to fit your interests, your skills, and the age of the children you want to work with - the project covers babies, toddlers and school-age children. You will learn new skills, carry out vital work and make lifelong friends!

For everything you need to know, and to apply, visit the Kidogo website.

Tourlina is a free app for solo female travellers, allowing you to find and meet them.

Moovit is a free app for live public transport info, in the UK and a number of other countries. It's up for an award too, so it must be good!

Astro is another free app up for an award - it manages your email and calendar so you don't get overwhelmed with boring stuff while you're on your trip!

Canva is a free photo editing app - it's super popular because it's really good!

Women's hiking boots for £60 with a voucher code (shown in link)

Free travel guide - it's an American one but claims its tips are useful for any trip.

Loads more free travel guides here - including travel cheat sheets and how to create a life of travel.

Win a fancy Italian backpack from Attitude Supply

Win a trip to Australia worth £5,000 from The Telegraph!

Win £1,200 to spend on British Airways flights - you could get all over the place for that!

Yep, we're still going with this, we really do have that much new stuff to show you!

This month is one of our most popular sections, Paid work abroad. We've always had this of course, but now there's tons more information about it and we've got heaps of programmes for you as well. Plus all the organisations who can make it happen for you.

We posted How to sustain strong professional networks while you're on a career break by financial technology big cheese Cecilia Harvey last month but, er, there was a teeny omission so we updated it and we're sharing it again!

We also updated How to avoid the latest travel scam. We asked some of our favourite travel experts on Twitter (we name them in the post) if this scam was still going and they confirmed that it is. Please read this as it's sadly a very clever scam - it even nearly got us!

And we found an interview in the archive that we never posted, so we dusted it off, and posted it here for your reading pleasure. The interview with Rachel Jones is unusual as it's an interview that takes place BEFORE someone's career break rather than after. You can see if she had the same worries and concerns as you!

Our final post is a crowd-sourced post where we got our followers on Facebook and Twitter to share their top travel tips with you. And by jingo, there are some really good ones! Read Top travel tips from top travellers here.

We're currently looking for real career breakers, travellers, industry experts and bloggers to share their stories on our blog. If you want to be famous and featured, drop us an email.

The winners of the World Press Photo competition are out - this is what you're up against if you want to be a photojournalist! WARNING: some violence and death - don't look if you don't want to see that.

We really like this one - How to afford to travel the world (even if you're broke AF) - by "professional adventurer" Sorelle Amore. She shares some of her tips and tricks she's learnt as a digital nomad.

Those trousers with the zip-off bottom bits to turn them into shorts are fab for travellers! But if you take some, make sure you wash the whole thing at once, even if you haven't worn the zip off bits. Otherwise they won't fade at the same rate and they'll look weird!

If you have a tip for us, email us or tweet us.

This month's message comes from a comment on one of our Facebook posts from the lovely Anita Williams, who gave us her permission to use it here. She says:

"I sold 75% of my belongings to fund a year-long internship and I used facebook, ebay, Gumtree, and even some old-school garage sales... I also ran several cake stalls and even a trivia night!"

She later added: "FYI, following my year internship I got my dream job! Thanks for a great website."

If you've got a question, feedback or just want to share your flapjack recipe, get in touch! We never reveal your name (unless you want us to!)

Er... we had a complaint about this last month, from someone who said it was distasteful to include a joke about Stephen Hawking. But it wasn't ABOUT Stephen Hawking, it was FROM him. It was his own joke which we found in a video of him doing (ironically) stand-up. Hope that clears things up! And well done for keeping this the most complained-about section of the newsletter!

And here's today's joke:

People used to laugh when I said I wanted to be a comedian. Well, no-one's laughing now.

We've started running a Friday caption competition on Facebook - there's no prize but our contributors' comments give us all a much-needed laugh at the end of the week! If you want to join in, just like and follow us on Facebook. See you there!

Until next time,
