Your role at this project will depend on your experience and the needs of the project at the time. Mostly you will be assisting local teachers as they teach in schools or provide after-school support sessions.
The children you will work with are a range of ages, from nursery right through to secondary school, and also some older children. If you have experience at a particular level, you can make the most of this by teaching at the same level. In addition, you may do some work at the teacher training college, which allows young teachers to work closely with a native English speaker and get ideas for lesson structuring.
This project is unique in that you are offered the chance to not only interact and support children’s learning, but pay particular attention to the source, and work closely with teachers. Your native English skills will be a huge asset, and depending on your level of skill, will have the chance to arrange small workshops, produce educational materials and design lesson plans.
Volunteers get the chance to use their skills in education and English, to improve the standard of education available to families in disadvantaged communities in Siem Reap. Adjusting to the current style teaching and working with local staff to develop their style in a way that benefits both staff and students will allow you to use your skills in an entirely new context and have the chance to make a real sustainable impact.
